The Story of Mei Mei: From Prison to Freedom

Mei Mei was born in 2015 at the Chengdu Panda Breeding Center, one of the world's leading panda conservation institutions. As a young orphan, she received intensive care from biologists and veterinarians. What makes Mei Mei's story unique is her journey to the wild.

After three years of training in a semi-wild environment, where she learned to find food and avoid predators, she was released into the Wolong National Nature Reserve. Mei Mei's adaptation to the wild was a great success: in 2020, she was observed with her first cub. Her story symbolizes hope and progress for panda conservation.

Numbers That Show the Impact

  • In the 1980s, there were fewer than 1,000 pandas in the wild . Today, there are more than 1,800 pandas living in their natural habitat.
  • There are more than 67 protected areas in China, which together protect over 53% of panda habitat.
  • Since 2003, more than 300 pandas have been successfully released into the wild , with a survival rate of over 80%.
